Several astronomical institutes in Germany operate observatories, serving a range of scientific and educational purposes. The operation of an astronomical observatory requires specialized technology and management infrastructure that exceeds requirements at a typical research facility. The primary aim of ATNG is to facilitate scientific and technical cooperation between the participating institutes.

The main tasks of ATNG are the following:

• Provide a platform for cooperation on operation and instrumentation
• Provide an archive of technical information and software
• Provide a platform to share observing time across institutes
• Scientific community building, scientific collaboration and education
